Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/13/25): Cubs 4, Blue Jays 1 – Horton Keeps Rolling in Win

The Cubs and Blue Jays got together in the second game of their series north of the border at Rogers Center Wednesday night. Chicago got an outstanding starting pitching performance and just enough offense to earn a victory.

The North Siders took the lead when Michael Busch hit a solo home run off of Kevin Gausman in the top of the 3rd. Cade Horton was very sharp yet again and kept Toronto hitless through the first five frames. Matt Shaw stayed hot with another solo shot that gave the road team a 2-0 advantage in the 5th.

Horton was pulled with two on and two outs in the bottom of the 6th and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. greeted reliever Andrew Kittredge with an RBI double that cut the Jays’ deficit in half. Kittredge got a warning track fly out to end the inning and keep the Cubs in front 2-1.

Chicago picked up a pair of 8th inning insurance runs on a Busch sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Seiya Suzuki. Things got scary when Miguel Amaya was carted off the field after suffering a nasty-looking leg injury while beating out an infield hit earlier in the frame. It ended up being just a sprained ankle, but Amaya will head back to the IL.

Daniel Palencia closed out the game in the 9th as the North Siders won 4-1. (Box score)

Key Moment

Addison Barger hit a fly ball to the warning track in left with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the 6th to keep the Cubs on top 2-1. That was Toronto’s best scoring chance on the night.

Why the Cubs Won

Great work by the entire pitching staff and some timely insurance runs made the difference in this game.

Stats That Matter

  • Horton finally gave up a run in the second half, but he wasn’t on the mound when it scored: 5.2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 8 K, 2 BB.
  • Suzuki got on twice with a walk in addition to his single.
  • Shaw has eight home runs since the All-Star break.
  • Nico Hoerner two singles and two stolen bases on Wednesday.

Bottom Line

Horton is developing quicker than most people would have expected before the season. The Cubs are very thankful for that, because the young righty is keeping them afloat during this current rough patch. Chicago has managed to avoid any big losing skids, now they need to go on a hot streak at some point soon.

On Deck

The rubber match of the series is Thursday afternoon at 2:07pm CT. Matthew Boyd goes up against Max Scherzer in a game available on Marquee with the radio feed on 670 The Score.
