Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/10/25): Cubs 3, Braves 2 – Baserunning, Bullpen Power Series Victory
The Cubs and Braves played the deciding contest of their three-game set on a very pleasant Wednesday night at Truist Park. Chicago manufactured some offense and got great work from the bullpen to win the series.
Atlanta struck first when Nacho Alvarez Jr. hit an RBI double off of returning starter Jameson Taillon in the bottom of the 3rd. Chris Sale dominated early, but the North Siders got to him in the 4th with a game-tying home run by Carson Kelly and a run-scoring single by Justin Turner to give the road squad a 2-1 lead.
Seiya Suzuki increased the Cubs’ advantage to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 5th inning. Taillon came out of the game in the bottom of the frame with runners on first and third and one out. Taylor Rogers took over and allowed a sac fly to Matt Olson to bring the Braves within a run.
Chicago’s bullpen was outstanding from there, protecting the one-run lead through the final four innings with Andrew Kittredge securing the save in an important 3-2 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
In the 5th inning, Nico Hoerner singled, advanced to second on a bad pickoff throw by Sale, and stole third base to get into position to score the eventual winning run on Suzuki’s sac fly.
Why the Cubs Won
Aggressive baserunning and excellent pitching was a winning combination on Wednesday.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon did a pretty good job off of the IL: 4.1 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB.
- Hoerner had three hits and a couple stolen bases.
- Kelly is really hitting for power so far in September with four homers.
Bottom Line
That was the kind of game the Cubs are going to play in the playoffs where runs are hard to come by and the bullpen is very important. Speed is a major asset for Chicago and one they have not used very much the past couple of months. Wednesday demonstrates how helpful it could be in October.
On Deck
