Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/14/26): Cubs 10, Phillies 4 – Clutch Hitting Leads Way To Victory
After suffering a lopsided defeat Monday night, it was the Cubs turn to score double-digit runs at Citizens Bank Park. They put up 10 runs on the Phillies Tuesday to erase an early deficit and win to even the series.
Colin Rea took over for opener Riley Martin in the 2nd inning and ran into immediate trouble, giving up a three-run homer to Edmundo Sosa that put Philadelphia in front 3-0. Chicago got two of those runs back in the top of the 3rd against starter Aaron Nola with a Nico Hoerner single and an Ian Happ RBI double.
The North Siders tied the game in the top of the 5th on a run-scoring single by Alex Bregman. Rea settled in nicely after the home run, giving up no additional runs through the 7th inning.
The Cubs loaded the bases against Phillies reliever Tim Mayza in the top of the 6th inning and Hoerner hit a two-run single to give his team a lead. They expanded the advantage later in the frame when Bregman drove home a pair with a hit to make it 7-3.
The Phillies threatened in the bottom of the 8th getting an RBI single by Trea Turner but Caleb Thielbar stranded the bases loaded to keep the margin at 7-4. Carson Kelly added much-needed insurance with a three-run jack against Tanner Banks in the 9th inning and Chicago was victorious 10-4. (Box score)
Key Moment
- Rea was great after his one mistake Tuesday: 6 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
- Bregman had three hits and is starting to settle in.
- Kelly has been good all season and had a single and a walk in addition to the homer.
Bottom Line
Hoerner is always clutch with runners on base, and once again proved the Cubs were smart to lock him up long-term. Chicago’s offense is finally starting to show just how dangerous it can be when everyone is clicking. If they keep this up they should make a lot of pitching staffs nervous.
Bottom Line
The rubber match of the series is Wednesday night at 5:40pm CT. Shōta Imanaga takes on Jesus Luzardo in a game broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
