Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/27/26): Cubs 10, Pirates 4 – Big Inning Snaps Losing Streak

The Cubs’ offense finally came to play on Wednesday night against the Pirates after nearly two weeks of frustration. The road team put up double digits on the scoreboard and finally snapped their brutal 10-game losing streak.

Chicago rallied in the opening inning when Ian Happ had a two-run single against starter Bubba Chandler to give them a 2-0 lead. Nico Hoerner added an RBI single in the top of the 2nd to increase the advantage to 3-0.

Jameson Taillon had his familiar bugaboo in the bottom of the 3rd when he gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Brandon Lowe. The North Siders went back ahead on an RBI double by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the 4th, but Konnor Griffin hit a solo shot to even things up again in the bottom half.

The Cubs finally busted things open against the Pirates’ bullpen in the top of the 7th with a pair of home runs. Happ blasted a go-ahead three-run shot off of Yohan Ramirez, then pinch-hitter Michael Conforto had a two-run jack against Justin Lawrence to make it 9-4.

Michael Busch would add one more on an RBI single to complete the six-run inning. It was smooth sailing after that for the Cubs, who finished off the much-needed 10-4 win with very little drama. (Box score)

Key Moment

Power had been in short supply for the Cubs during the current losing skid, so getting two home runs in the 7th inning was massive.

Why the Cubs Won

The hitters finally showed up and the bullpen did a decent job holding the fort.

Stats That Matter

  • The home runs are out of control for Taillon this season: 5 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 4 K, and 2 BB.
  • Happ badly needed to have a 5-RBI game and so did his team.
  • Dansby Swanson got on base three times, including a double.

Bottom Line

The Cubs have exorcised the demons, at least for one night. The first step was trying to stop the bleeding, and they accomplished that on Wednesday. With the current state of the starting rotation, offense is going to be very important if they want to keep winning. That is a topic for a different day, as getting out of their rut was the immediate goal.

On Deck

The series finale is Thursday night at 5:40pm CT. Colin Rea does battle against Paul Skenes in a game airing on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
