Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/10/26): Rockies 3, Cubs 2 – Walk-Off Loss Drops Cubs to Even Record
The Cubs’ inexorable drop toward the .500 mark finally reached its destination with a walk-off loss to the Rockies at Coors Field Wednesday night. The lineup only mustered two runs and the bullpen eventually cracked at the end of the game.
Shōta Imanaga was very sharp for Chicago, putting up five scoreless frames in the very hitter-friendly environment. The road team did not fare much better against Michael Lorenzen, but Pete Crow-Armstrong tripled and scored on a groundout by Moisés Ballesteros to make it 1-0 in the top of the 4th.
That’s where the score remained until the bottom of the 8th, when TJ Rumfield hit a go-ahead two-run homer off of Jacob Webb to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead. The North Siders did not go quietly, however, as Ian Happ hit a solo shot against closer Antonio Senzatela to tie the game in the top of the 9th.
The excitement would be short-lived as Cubs’ closer Daniel Palencia ran into major issues in the bottom of the frame. A walk and a single put runners on the corners with nobody out for Sterlin Thompson, who singled home the winning run in a 3-2 Colorado victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
Alex Bregman popped out with two on and two out in the top of the 8th inning and the Cubs ahead 1-0. Bregman is now hitless in his last 27 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Why the Cubs Lost
It’s exceedingly difficult to win at Coors Field when you only score two runs. It put tons of pressure on the relief crew and that eventually proved to be too much.
Stats That Matter
- Impressive work by Imanaga to keep the ball in the ballpark: 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 7 K, and 2 BB.
- Happ leads the team with 15 home runs this season.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have completely erased the ground they gained with their 20-3 stretch in April and May. There seems to be very little evidence of any kind of turnaround, even with a favorable stretch of the schedule right now. There is a real danger of the bottom completely falling out, and I’m not sure what can change that right now.
On Deck
Chicago attempts to avoid the sweep on Thursday afternoon at 2:10pm CT. Edward Cabrera is on the mound against Ryan Feltner in a game broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
