Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/8/26): Brewers 4, Cubs 3 F/10 – Webb Blows Another Save

The Cubs suffered another painful loss thanks to a bullpen failure against the Brewers on Tuesday night. The road team had dramatically gone in front in the top of the 9th before closer Jacob Webb conceded another home run that sent the game to extra innings, where the home side walked it off.

Chicago got to fireballing Jacob Misiorowski in the top of the 1st with an RBI single by Michael Busch, but that was the only run they scored against him. Milwaukee got their only tally against David Peterson in the bottom of the frame when Brice Turang singled home Jackson Chourio.

That was all the offense until the top of the 9th, when the North Siders loaded the bases against closer Trevor Megill before Carson Kelly hit a two-run double to give his team a 3-1 lead. Webb followed a familiar pattern, quickly retiring the first two batters before allowing a single and then a long game-tying homer to Chourio.

The game moved to extra innings and the Cubs did nothing in the top of the 10th after courtesy runner Seiya Suzuki got thrown out trying to tag on a fly out by Alex Bregman. The Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom half and Luis Lara won it with an RBI single. (Box score)

Key Moment

Chicago had men on second and third with one out after the Kelly double in the 9th. DL Hall took over for Megill, striking out Pete Crow-Armstrong and getting Suzuki to fly out to keep Milwaukee in striking distance.

Why the Cubs Lost

The bullpen continues to be allergic to holding onto a lead in the late innings.

Stats That Matter

• A much better job by Peterson than his previous start: 4.1 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 4 K, and 3 BB.
• Nico Hoerner had two more hits and is up to .265 after hitting .243 through June.

Bottom Line

Same old story for the Cubs right now at the end of games. They just have no reliable high-leverage arms they can feel even reasonably comfortable employing in big moments. It’s not a formula for success in October, and they might not even make the postseason if I can’t do something to stabilize it.
