Daniel Palencia to 60-Day IL as Cubs Make Several Roster Moves

I just wrapped up a semifinal win in our softball league, so I’m in a bit of a time crunch. As such, I initially knee-jerked about Daniel Palencia going to the 60-day IL. It’s really just a procedural thing that I’m meatballing about, so disregard any weirdness.

The Chicago Cubs today recalled outfielder Kevin Alcántara and right-handed pitcher Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa, selected the contract of infielder Owen Miller from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding moves, the Cubs placed shortstop Dansby Swanson on the 10-Day Injured List (left oblique strain), placed right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera on the 15-Day Injured List (right middle finger blister), optioned infielder James Triantos to Triple-A Iowa and transferred right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia to the 60-day injured list. Miller will wear #66.

Alcántara, 24, has batted .271 (71-for-262) with 14 doubles, 19 home runs, 49 RBI, 45 runs scored and five stolen bases in 69 games with Iowa this season, producing a .363 on-base percentage and a .905 OPS. He has appeared in 33 major league games across parts of the last three seasons with Chicago, batting .238 (10-for-42) with one home run and six RBI. Alcántara was acquired from the New York Yankees with right-handed pitcher Alexander Vizcaíno for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and cash considerations on July 29, 2021.

Miller, 29, has hit .296 (109-for-368) with 26 doubles, six triples, seven home runs, 57 RBI, 50 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 96 games with Iowa this season. The Mequon, Wis., native owns a .238 career average (225-for-947) with 15 home runs and 100 RBI in 303 major league games with Cleveland (2021-22), Milwaukee (2023-24) and Colorado (2025). Miller signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in February.

Assad, 29, is 6-1 with a 3.59 ERA (32 ER/80.1 IP), 53 strikeouts, 21 walks and a 1.12 WHIP in 21 games, 10 starts, with the Cubs this season. He was optioned to Iowa yesterday.

Swanson, 32, is hitting .216 (87-for-403) with 18 home runs and 66 RBI in 119 games this season for the Cubs.

Cabrera, 28, is 5-5 with a 5.68 ERA (48 ER/76.0 IP) in 15 starts with the Cubs this season.

Triantos, 23, is hitting .125 (1-for-8) in seven games with the Cubs this season.

Palencia, 26, was placed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation on June 16. He is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA (5 ER/16.2 IP) and three saves in 19 games in relief for Chicago this season.

The Cubs play the Chicago White Sox tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 The Score and, in Spanish, on 106.7 TUDN.
