Cubs Claim RHP Eduarniel Núñez off Waivers from Orioles

It seems like the Cubs are adding a new pitcher every day, with the latest being old friend Eduarniel Núñez. The righty spent several years in the Cubs organization before signing with the Padres in 2024. He made his MLB debut with San Diego on July 2, 2025, and was then traded to the Athletics as part of the Mason Miller deal.

Núñez has struck out 415 batters across 362.2 minor league innings, which would be good if he hadn’t also walked 246 with 306 hits allowed. At least he’s limited the homers. Barring a big trade, which isn’t going to happen at this point in the season, these depth moves are about all Jed Hoyer can do for the time being.

The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Eduarniel Núñez (eh-DWAR-nee-el) off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and optioned him to the Arizona Complex League. The 40-man roster currently stands at 39.players.

Núñez, 27, is 1-1 with a 7.13 ERA (14 ER/17.2 IP) in 17 combined games this season between Double-A Midland, Triple-A Las Vegas and Triple-A Norfolk in the Athletics and Orioles systems. The righthander made his major league debut with San Diego on July 2, 2025 and pitched in 10 games between the Padres and Athletics last season, going 1-0 with a 7.11 ERA (10 ER/12.2 IP).

The six-foot two-inch Núñez was originally signed by the Cubs as a minor league free agent on March 15, 2017 and spent the 2017-24 seasons in the Cubs system. He signed with San Diego as a minor league free agent in November 2024 and was traded to the Athletics on July 31, 2025 as part of a six-player trade involving right-handed pitcher Mason Miller. He was acquired by Baltimore on May 15 for cash considerations.

The Samana, D.R. native has pitched in 246 career minor league games (24 starts), going 27-24 with a 4.02 ERA (162 ER/362.2 IP) and 22 saves.
