Cubs Activate Taillon, Add Civale, DFA Pomeranz, Place Maton on IL

The Cubs’ revolving door of a pitching staff is turning fast enough to register as a low-grade tornado, with several more moves announced on Monday. None of this is particularly surprising, just like it would not be a shock to hear they’ve added Nate Pearson. They haven’t — yet — but it’s typically only a matter of time before the Cubs reunite with a pitcher who’s been designated for assignment by another team.

The Chicago Cubs today reinstated right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon from the 15-day injured list and added right-handed pitcher Aaron Civale to the 26-man roster. In corresponding moves, left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz has been designated for assignment and right-handed pitcher Phil Maton has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right knee tendinitis.

Taillon, 34, was placed on the injured list on June 8 with a left hamstring strain. Before his stint on the IL, Taillon was 205 with a 5.19 ERA (39 ER/67.2 IP), 59 strikeouts and 23 walks in 13 starts. The righty made two rehab appearances, one with High-A South Bend and one with Triple-A Iowa, going a combined 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) and five strikeouts. Taillon is expected to start tonight’s game.

Civale, 31, was acquired with cash considerations from the Athletics on Saturday in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Aiden Moffett. He will wear #38.

Pomeranz, 37, made six relief appearances for the Cubs, allowing five earned runs in 5.2 innings (7.94 ERA).

Maton, 33, is 0-1 with a 6.18 ERA (19 ER/27.2 IP), 31 strikeouts and 16 walks in 31 games, all in relief, with the Cubs this season. This is his third stint on the injured list this season.

The Cubs play the Detroit Tigers today at 7:05 p.m. at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 the Score and, in Spanish, on TUDN 106.7.
